About Us

Diabetes Dialog is a project of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Each year, under the supervision of the school’s director of health/medicine reporting program, Trudy Lieberman, students investigate and report on diabetes in the Hunts Point and Mott Haven sections of the South Bronx where a large percentage of the population have diabetes or are at risk of developing the disease. Our aim is to use a multimedia platform to help the community cope with diabetes and create strategies for prevention, especially for the neighborhoods’ children.

We believe the more young people learn about diabetes, its causes and effects, the more likely they are to adopt healthier habits that will stay with them as they grow older. Who knows? They might even help mom, dad, an aunt or a grandmother take better care of themselves.

Area residents confront many socio-economic challenges that make it hard to eat right, get medical care and take care of themselves. So far, our reporters have covered topics such as transportation obstacles, physical education, diet choices and recreation centers. Each successive class of health/medicine students will build on the work of previous ones.

So, let’s talk about diabetes. Join in the dialog by keeping a food diary, suggesting good places to work out around Hunts Point, submitting your questions to one of our experts or just reaching out to one of our cool people to know.
