The growing number of diabetics in New York City shows that where a person lives can have a profound affect on who is more likely to get the disease. While an alarmingly high number of New Yorkers have been diagnosed with diabetes, residents in low-income neighborhoods such as the South Bronx are hospitalized for diabetes at 10 times the rate of people living in higher-income neighborhoods like the Upper East Side.
